People with these immune conditions produce extra amounts of an inflammatory protein called tumour necrosis factor alpha (TNF-alpha), causing pain, inflammation, and cellular damage. Humira (Adalimumab) works by blocking the production of TNF-alpha to reduce the inflammation in the joints and on the skin. Depending on what Humira (Adalimumab) is being used to treat, it can take 4 to 12 weeks for you to notice an improvement in your condition.

Your doctor may have suggested Humira (Adalimumab) for conditions other than the ones listed in these drug information articles. If you have not discussed this with your doctor or are not sure why you are using Humira (Adalimumab), speak to your doctor. Do not stop using Humira (Adalimumab) without consulting your doctor.

Do not give Humira (Adalimumab) to anyone else, even if they have the same symptoms as you do. It can be harmful for people to use Humira (Adalimumab) if their doctor has not prescribed it.

Humira (Adalimumab) is given by subcutaneous (under the skin) injection, usually in the front of the thigh or abdomen. The dose depends on the condition being treated.

For rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, and ankylosing spondylitis, the recommended dose for adults is 40 mg every other week.

For adults with Crohn’s disease or Ulcerative Colitis, the recommended dose is a first dose of 160 mg, then 80 mg 2 weeks after the first dose, then 40 mg every second week starting 4 weeks after the first dose.

For adults with psoriasis or uveitis, the recommended dose is a first dose of 80 mg, then 40 mg every other week starting one week after the first dose.

For children over 2 years old with uveitis, the dose of Humira (Adalimumab) is 20 mg every other week for children who weigh less than 30 kg and 40 mg every other week for children who weigh 30 kg or more.

When treating polyarticular juvenile idiopathic arthritis in children over 2 years old, the dose of Humira (Adalimumab) is 20 mg every other week for children who weigh 10 kg to less than 30 kg. For children who weigh 30 kg or more, the dose is 40 mg given every other week.

Humira (Adalimumab) is used with the guidance and supervision of a doctor. Your doctor or nurse will assist you in the preparation and injection of your first dose (or first few doses). Do not attempt to inject Humira (Adalimumab) on your own until you completely understand how to inject a dose. If you are having difficulty giving yourself injections, ask a family member or other caregiver for help if they are willing to become involved with your treatment and are willing to learn how to give you your injections.

Many things can affect the dose of medication that a person needs, such as body weight, other medical conditions, and other medications. If your doctor has recommended a dose different from the ones listed here, do not change the way that you are using the medication without consulting your doctor.

It is important to use Humira (Adalimumab) exactly as prescribed by your doctor. If you miss a dose, administer it as soon as possible and continue with your regular schedule. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one. If you are not sure what to do after missing a dose, contact your doctor or pharmacist for advice.
